How raffle odds work
With one prize, your chance is simply the tickets you hold divided by the tickets sold. Five tickets out of 500 is 5 ÷ 500, or 1%. That’s 1 in 100.
With more than one prize, your chances go up, because there are more draws. The calculator works out the chance that at least one of your tickets gets pulled, assuming a ticket can only win once (which is how most raffles run).
A quick example
A school sells 500 tickets and draws 3 prizes. You bought 5. Your chance of winning something is about 3%, or roughly 1 in 34. Buy 10 and it’s close to 6%.
What organizers should take from this
Buyers think about odds more than you’d guess, especially for big prizes. Two things help:
- Cap the tickets for a big prize. “Only 300 tickets will be sold” tells people exactly what their odds are, and it creates urgency.
- Add a few smaller prizes. More winners means better odds for everyone, which makes the second and third ticket an easier sell.
Raffle odds FAQ
How do you calculate raffle odds?
For one prize, divide the number of tickets you hold by the total number of tickets sold. Ten tickets out of 1,000 is a 1% chance, or 1 in 100.
Does buying more tickets improve your odds?
Yes, in direct proportion. Doubling your tickets roughly doubles your chance of winning when there’s one prize.
Are the odds better with more prizes?
Yes. Each extra prize is another draw, so the chance that one of your tickets is picked goes up with every prize.
Should a raffle publish how many tickets it will sell?
For big prizes, capping and publishing the number of tickets builds trust and helps sales, because buyers can see their odds. Check whether your state requires it.
Do online raffle tickets have the same odds as paper tickets?
They should. In a fair hybrid raffle, every ticket sold online and on paper goes into the same drawing with one entry each.
