How a duck race fundraiser works
- People adopt numbered ducks for a donation, just like buying a raffle ticket.
- Each duck gets the matching number on its bottom or back.
- On race day, every adopted duck goes in the water at the same time, upstream or at one end of a pool.
- The first ducks across the finish line win, and the adopters of those numbers take home the prizes.
Tips from people who’ve fished a lot of ducks out of a lot of rivers
- Only race the ducks you sold. Pull unsold numbers so every duck in the water has an owner.
- Put a net or boom at the finish and a couple of volunteers in waders downstream.
- Film the finish. When two ducks are close, the video ends the argument.
- Check your state’s rules. Many states treat a duck race like a raffle and require a license.

Duck race FAQ
How does a duck race fundraiser work?
Supporters adopt numbered rubber ducks for a donation. On race day all the adopted ducks are released together, and the adopters of the first ducks across the finish line win prizes.
How many ducks do we need?
Plan for the number you expect to sell, plus a few spares. Many community races sell a few hundred. Order ducks once your sales are close so you’re not stuck with extras.
Is a duck race the same as a raffle?
Legally, many states treat it as one: people pay for a chance to win a prize. Check whether you need a raffle or games-of-chance license before you sell.
Can people adopt ducks online?
Yes. Chance2Win sells pre-numbered ducks online before the race, so out-of-town supporters can adopt one too, and handles refunds without scrambling the numbers.
What size labels fit on rubber ducks?
The 2.625 by 1 inch labels in this kit fit most standard racing ducks. Waterproof vinyl labels hold up best.
